Pets in the Workplace
Recently I popped in to visit a client and noticed a beautiful golden retriever walk past me. I soon realised she was not the only animal in their workplace – almost everyone in the room was accompanied by a furry little companion.
The thing that stood out to me was how focused and happy everyone seemed to be! And I started to think about the effect animals have on us in the workplace.
My research on ‘Pet Friendly’ workplaces shows the overall effects of pets at work are extremely positive! Studies show that animals in the workplace actually encourage people to collaborate and converse more with each other. Pets add another layer of interaction between co-workers, and otherwise quiet employees can become more engaged when talking to a co-worker about their pets. It is as if the animals are creating a more engaging environment for everyone.
The more I think about it the more it makes sense! I mean, isn’t this what we are hoping to do in the workplace nowadays? Get everyone up from their desk and encourage them to engage in conversations with each other – to be more productive. Maybe a furry little creature of love is exactly what we need to get us up and talking!
Some may argue that pets can be a distraction with their adorable puppy eyes and furry coats, but I think it’s a win-win situation. Your loyal companion gets to accompany you to work, and you are not only happier, but more productive because of it!
